Instagram auto reply: how to set it up, what to say, and which tools to trust
An auto reply is the message Instagram sends for you when a DM arrives and you are not there. Done well it keeps a lead warm for the minutes or hours until someone answers; done badly it is the message that tells them to go elsewhere. This guide covers the native setup, eight scripts, and the point where a canned reply stops working and an AI reply takes over.
Short answer: To auto reply on Instagram, switch to a professional account, then use Saved replies and Frequently asked questions under Settings, Business tools. Those send a fixed message. For replies that answer the lead's actual question, connect an AI appointment setter through Meta's official Instagram login, which reads each DM and answers in your voice. Never use a tool that asks for your Instagram password.
What an Instagram auto reply can and cannot do
Instagram has no single "auto reply" switch the way email has an out-of-office. What it offers, on a professional (business or creator) account, is a set of shortcuts that send a fixed message: saved replies you trigger with a keyword, and frequently asked questions a new visitor can tap. Everything beyond that runs through Meta's Instagram Messaging API, which is how third-party tools and AI setters send replies from your account.
The line that matters: a fixed auto reply answers the question you predicted. The lead asked a question you did not predict, and the fixed reply cannot see it. That is why the setup below runs in three levels, and why the last level is the only one that turns a reply into a booked call. For the wider category, including comment-to-DM and welcome messages, see Instagram auto DM.
Level 1: set up Instagram's built-in auto replies
Both native tools live in the same place. Open your profile, tap the menu, then Settings and privacy → Business tools and controls (the name varies slightly by app version).
- Saved replies. Create a reply, give it a shortcut like "price" or "book". In any DM, type the shortcut and tap the saved-reply icon to insert it. It is manual, but it turns a 40-second answer into a 3-second one.
- Frequently asked questions. Add up to four questions with answers. When someone opens a new conversation with you, they see the questions as tappable chips and get the answer instantly, with nobody online.
Use FAQs for the four things people ask before they ask anything else: price or price range, what you do, where you are, how to book. Use saved replies for the ten messages you type every day.
Where Level 1 stops: the moment the person types their own words instead of tapping a chip, nothing happens until you are back.
Level 2: auto-reply tools and bots
Third-party tools connect through Instagram's official login and send an automatic reply on a trigger: a new conversation, a keyword in the message, a story reply, a comment. Most of them are flow builders. You draw the conversation as boxes and arrows, and the tool walks the lead through it.
They are good at delivery jobs (send the link, send the PDF, collect an email) and at a first response while you are asleep. The limit is the same one Level 1 has, one step later: the lead answers with a real question, the flow has no box for it, and the lead gets "Sorry, I didn't understand that". The tool-by-tool comparison is in best Instagram DM automation tools.
Safety check for any tool: it must connect with the "Continue with Instagram" login, never a password field, and you must be able to disconnect it from Instagram's own settings. Anything else operates outside Meta's API and is the kind of automation that gets accounts restricted. The full rule set is in Instagram DM automation rules.
Level 3: AI replies that answer the actual question
An AI appointment setter also replies automatically, but there is no flow. It reads the message, composes an answer from your offer, your rules and your past conversations, and sends it in your voice, usually within a minute. Ask "does this work if I'm in Australia?" and it answers that question, then continues toward the booking: your qualifying questions, your booking link when they are answered, and a follow-up if the lead goes quiet.
This is the level where "auto reply" stops meaning "hold the lead until I'm back" and starts meaning "the lead got answered". In Setterr's live workspace the median first reply is 52 seconds at every hour, and 11.4% of engaged conversations booked a call; the full numbers are in the booking benchmarks.
Setup takes minutes: sign in with Instagram, let it import your recent DMs and infer how you sell, replay a real past thread, then run in draft mode (every reply waits for your tap) before switching on autopilot.
Eight Instagram auto-reply scripts
These are written for Level 1 and Level 2, where the reply is fixed. Keep them short, keep them in your own voice, and always end with the one thing you want the person to do next.
1. Pricing question
"Hey! Pricing depends on what you're after, so quick question first: are you looking at [option A] or [option B]? I'll send exact numbers as soon as I know."
2. After hours
"Thanks for the message! I'm offline until [time] but I read every DM myself. If it's about [offer], the quickest route is to grab a time here: [booking link]. Otherwise I'll reply first thing."
3. New conversation welcome
"Hey [name], thanks for reaching out. What's the main thing you're hoping to fix right now? One line is plenty."
4. Story reply
"Glad that one landed! Is this something you're dealing with at the moment, or just curious how it works?"
5. Booking request
"Love it. Here's my calendar: [booking link]. Pick whatever works and you'll get a confirmation straight away."
6. Location and hours
"We're at [address], open [hours]. Want me to hold a spot for you? Tell me a day that suits."
7. Lead magnet delivery
"Here's the [guide/checklist] you asked for: [link]. When you've had a look, tell me the one part you'd want help with."
8. Holding reply while a human is busy
"Got your message and a real person is on it. Give me a few minutes and I'll answer properly, not with a bot."
Notice that every script asks a question or offers one next step. A reply that only says "thanks, we'll get back to you" ends the conversation on your side, which is the opposite of the point. More conversation scripts, including the high-ticket sequence, are in Instagram DM scripts.

Auto-reply mistakes that lose the lead
- Answering with the booking link before any question. Unqualified bookings become no-shows. Ask one thing first.
- A reply that cannot handle the follow-up. If your auto reply invites a question, something has to answer it.
- Sounding like a bot. Write the script the way you type. Drop the "Greetings valued customer".
- Replying to people who never messaged you. That is not an auto reply, it is a mass DM, and it is what gets accounts restricted.
- No human path. Every setup needs a way for the lead to reach a person and for you to step into the thread.

Frequently asked
How do I set up an auto reply on Instagram?
Switch to a professional account, then open Settings → Business tools and controls. Saved replies let you insert a canned message with a shortcut; Frequently asked questions show up to four tappable questions with automatic answers when someone starts a new conversation. For replies that answer the lead's own words, connect an AI appointment setter through Instagram's official login.
Does Instagram have an automatic reply for DMs?
Not a single out-of-office switch. Professional accounts get saved replies and FAQ chips, which send a fixed message. Anything that replies to a free-typed message automatically comes from a tool connected through Meta's Instagram Messaging API, from flow builders to AI setters.
What is the best Instagram auto reply tool?
It depends on the job. For delivering links on a keyword, a flow builder such as ManyChat is cheap and reliable. For inbound leads that should turn into booked calls, an AI appointment setter like Setterr answers the actual question, qualifies the lead and books the call, for a flat $250 a month.
Is using an Instagram auto reply bot against the rules?
No, as long as the bot connects through Meta's official API on a professional account and only replies to people who messaged you or commented. Tools that log in with your password, and bots that message people who never contacted you, are what Meta restricts.
What should an Instagram auto reply say?
Acknowledge the message, answer or move toward the answer, and end with one clear next step: a question, or a booking link once the person is qualified. Keep it in your own voice and under three sentences.
